A 40-year-old woman was reportedly tonsured and exhibited on the street with her face blackened in the Kendrapara neighborhood of Odisha by a group of locals, mostly women, for cheating on them after promising to get approval of their loans from a cooperative bank, a police officer said on Tuesday.

The disturbing episode took place a few days ago in a village in Pattamundai Block, 103 km east of Bhubaneswar, the officer said.

Video of the incident went viral on social media.

The victim told reporters that she took 12,000 from them to sanction their loans, and also assured them that the money taken from them would be refunded. She further claimed that the crowd forcibly took 25,000 rupees and some ornaments from her.

” We took steps after the victim filed a complaint. At least 10 women were arrested based on video evidence, ” said Tapan Rout, a model inspector at Pattamundai Police Station.

One case was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (assault with intent to insult a woman), 323 (causing willful injury), 379 (theft) , as well as under the Information Technology Act. the officer said, adding that an investigation was underway.
