Trash can attack
Limestone County and Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful will be hosting a free trash attack event from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 2. free disposal. Rules: Four tires maximum; devices containing freon must have the compressor removed or a certificate attesting that the freon has been removed from the device by a professional; no hazardous household or medical waste; no entrepreneurs; must provide proof of residence, such as a current utility bill.

Clothing donation
Women Empowering Women will host a free food and clothing distribution from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 2 at Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park. Clothing for children, women and men available. Masks strongly encouraged.

Walk in the cemetery
The Athens City Cemetery Walk is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 at the city’s cemetery between Hobbs and Washington Streets, across from Athens State University. Learn about the city’s founding fathers from local actors in period attire, many of whom are descendants of the people they represent.

The Morrison sisters will perform at 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 at the Baptist Church in Berea. The church is located at 16779 Lucas Ferry Rd. A love offering will be received.

Haunt Walks / Horse and Wagon Tour
The Haunt Walks will be held every Tuesday and Thursday in October starting at 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., the walking tours and horse and cart tours will be at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $ 5 for children 12 and under, $ 10 for 13 and over. . The horse and cart will hold eight people at $ 20 per person.

Fall cleaning
The Nebo Community Church will be hosting a fall clean-up at Nebo Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 9. Nebo Cemetery is located on the nuclear power plant route in Athens. Those who want to help with the cleanup are encouraged to bring shovels and weedkiller. Donations will be accepted.
Garage sale profit
Auxiliary VFW Post 4765 will be holding a Veteran Benefit Garage Sale from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 at VFW Post 4765, 18615 N. Jefferson St., Athens. Donations for this garage sale will be accepted after 4 p.m. at the Post Office until the day of the garage sale.
Evangelical meeting
Northside Church, located at 1201 North Jefferson Street, will have a different speaker each day from Sunday October 10 through Wednesday October 13. Services will begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Services will take place at 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Levi Sides will speak on Sunday, Bill Irby will speak on Monday. Tuesday’s speaker will be David Cox and Wednesday’s speaker will be Ryan Knight.

The Owens Fire Department will be hosting a Trunk or Treat event from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday, October 30 at the Limestone Rodeo Arena located on Alabama 99. Inflatables will be ready at 5 pm.

Food donation
The pantry at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at 1911 Hine Street, Athens. Clients must provide proof of at least one of the following: eligibility to receive supplementary food assistance (SNAP / food stamps); eligibility for temporary assistance for needy families; eligibility to receive additional security income; income equal to or less than 130% of the federal poverty line; or special circumstances (fire, flood, illness, injury, etc.). CLEANING THE CEMETERY
City cemeteries
The city of Athens reminds residents and families of the following regarding its cemeteries: No flowers or decorations are allowed on the ground between April 1 and October 31, except after a funeral; placement of flowers acceptable all year round on monuments, at their base or at the boundary markers; fresh flowers will be removed one week after the funeral; silk flowers will be removed 21 days after the funeral; approval of the cemetery superintendent is required before planting flowers, shrubs, trees or sod; municipal staff will remove all trees or shrubs deemed harmful to adjacent lots or grave openings; and worn, tattered or damaged US flags will be removed and disposed of properly.
