Huntington Bank reopens its Sanford branch

Many Sanford residents are happy to see the long-awaited return of Huntington Bank, with some of the bank’s former employees returning as well.

The old Chemical Bank, which was flooded in May 2020 due to dam failures and had to be razed and rebuilt, reopened on Tuesday.

A customer who stopped by the bank on Thursday morning said she was delighted to see it reopen and to see familiar staff. The employees were also happy to see her again, exchanging greetings.

The new bank, at 256 West Saginaw Road, replaces the old Chemical Bank which was demolished last summer. In a short time in recent years, Chemical Bank was acquired by TCF, which then merged with Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bank.

Sanford Village President Dolores Porte is glad the newly opened bank has some of the same familiar faces helping customers.

Five of the eight employees who worked at the bank before it closed have returned. This includes bank manager Chris Bloom. Staff said it has been a long 22 months and they are happy to be back in the community they love. The other three original staff members are said to have moved on to other jobs within Huntington.

“We are very happy to see them back,” Porte said. “It’s so exciting. We’re glad they’re still here.

In an earlier interview, Huntington Regional Chairman Seth Perigo, who remembers the day the dams burst, said the financial institution wanted to be part of the Sanford community. He said Sanford’s resurgence is an “incredible” story and Huntington is happy to do his part in the community.

Huntington Bank, which has led its industry four years in a row in terms of small business loan volume, works with many customers to guarantee loans, including women, minorities and veterans. Perigo said they offer loans for as little as $1,000 and up to $150,000 in some programs.

Additionally, Perigo said it was important to have a face in the community and that Huntington’s headquarters are in downtown Midland.

The Sanford Huntington branch is hosting a ribbon cutting/dedication at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.
